Washington Square Park opens at 6 am and closes at midnight. Washington Mews is open in daytime only. The 1960s clubs, the jazz rooms and the Comedy Cellar are evening places. The Halloween Parade
The Village Halloween Parade runs along Sixth Avenue on 31 October. The ghost walk, which meets on Sixth Avenue, fits the season; its stories of the Hangman’s Elm, 14 West 10th Street and 12 Gay Street are presented as legend.
Halloween also suits the stops with a ghost story attached: the Hangman’s Elm in the park’s north-west corner, the Brown Building, the Church of the Ascension and Chumley’s on Bedford Street. Kate (Canada) described the ghost walk as full of surprises.
Winter
January and February are cold, and the walks still run in most weather. The two-hour walks are the shortest outdoor option; indoor stops such as Jefferson Market Library, the Stonewall visitor center and the cafés on MacDougal Street break up a cold day. The one-day itinerary works in any season.
